We all have things we want to buy, things that we are saving for and things that we want immediately. When sticking to a budget it is often difficult to maintain discipline, especially in a world where we are advertised to every waking minute of the day. So, to spare you from having to bury your head in the sand we have compiled 3 simple tips to help you stick to your budget.
1) Visualize the end result. Normally we budget ourselves for a reason. It might be a holiday we are saving for or a new car. It may even be something as important as a wedding day. Things will cause temptation. The convenience of ordering in food or having someone else wash the car. Whenever spending money, just picture the thing you are saving for and say no to the thing that is going to delay you getting that.
2) Micro manage your budget. You have likely created yourself a spreadsheet outlining your income and expenditure over a month or perhaps longer. But on a daily basis, you should total up exactly how much you spend. If you go over your daily allotted spending make sure that the next day you reduce spending by the amount you went over. If you canít reduce tomorrows amount then spread out the reduction over the week. If you find a pattern emerging where you are consistently borrowing from future days then your budget as a whole needs amending as it is not realistic.
3) Say no. This is the simplest and easiest way to always keep on track with a budget. It can also be the most annoying thing in the world to do. But, it is time to stand firm and say no whenever unnecessary spending rears its ugly head. This includes being disciplined with your loved ones as well as yourself. If the kids ask for a new toy you have to be able to say no and stamp your authority on staying in control of your budget.
Following a budget can be difficult. Stick to the three tips outlined above and you will be on track each month.
